I see an unreasonable number of movies every year. This includes almost every horror movie, no matter how campy, cheesy, or cheap and jump-scare-filled it promises to be. I knew I had to see it when I first saw previews for this year’s Tarot while watching a different horror movie. I loved the creepy stylistic Tarot cards being brought to life. Don’t go into this expecting a cerebral and thought-provoking adventure. But if you’re up for a supernatural experience where everyone seems to do the absolute most idiotic possible thing, almost no one fights back, and the deaths are PG-13 acceptable minimal gore, then I think you’ll have a good time with this one.
Let me be honest, this movie is the type that often gets panned for being reductive and predictable. And it is, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good time. My 14-year-old, G, and I had a blast watching it. We laughed at the characters’ choices and had fun discussing how we would have been smarter in their situations, even though we’d probably be the first ones dead. Well, at least I would be. I’m naturally skeptical, so I’d probably think there was a comic con nearby as I was being murdered. Just a word of caution, despite the movie’s warning about playing tarot, I’m pretty sure there will be a spike in the sale of beginner’s decks this month. So, be careful who you let tell your fortune.
