A family is in the midst of divorce, fighting for custody of their daughter Rose when her nanny plunges to her death from a 3rd story window. Stella, a BIA or Best Interest Attorney, is appointed for Rose to determine how best to split custody between her parents. But how can Stella decide what’s best for Rose when everyone is a suspect in the nanny’s death? Even Rose, who is stashing weapons and behaving strangely isn’t immune from suspicion. In this house of lies, Stella grapples with how to be Rose’s advocate, while worrying she might not be the one that needs to be saved.
Thriller fans, this is yet another excellent new selection. From the very beginning, it’s clear that nothing is as it seems in the Barclay household. This is a family on the brink of disaster and the nanny just plunged to her death from one of the historic home’s windows. Following the death of her nanny, Rose has been suffering from selective mutism. She hasn’t spoken a word. When Stella enters the picture to advocate for Rose’s best interests she is met with hesitance. No one in this house wants her around, including Rose. Strange things are happening in the home, not the least of which is that there is no glass anywhere.
House of Glass explores the crumbling family dynamics of the Barclay family and consequently forces Stella to confront her own difficult childhood. Stella’s motivation and backstory created a complex character and point of view. Additionally, the suspects presented are compelling. There is nothing like a creepy kid to make things interesting. Grandma was always hard to read and a little intriguing. The parent’s relationship was strange and I couldn’t always put my finger on how they felt about each other. I found myself looking for tiny clues about each, making mental notes all with the hope of solving the mystery before Stella. At times throughout I suspected everyone. Sometimes I would change my mind every few pages.
Exciting and full of intrigue, House of Glass is a solid thriller. Fans of books like The Housemaid will definitely find something to enjoy here. This new book will be released on August 6th, 2024.
