CoHo fans rejoiced this weekend as It Ends With Us hit theaters. And boy are there a lot of them. The movie has already grossed over $50 million in its first weekend. I rarely read Hoover, but my sister and mom both liked this one, so I read it as well, and the three of us hit the movie theater together. Along with everyone else and their mom. The theater was packed.
The movie is actually fairly faithful to the book. Most book movies I see are based on 400 page epics and while I would 100% watch a 72 part Lord of the Rings series that is completely faithful to the books, your average viewer probably doesn’t need to see how much walking there really was. Because there was. So. Much. Walking. It Ends With Us by contrast, was a quick read and translated pretty well to the screen. There were a few changes from the book, of course, but nothing substantial. I can’t say that it was fun to watch or even that I really enjoyed it due to the subject matter. It was heavy, emotional, and drawn out at times. The conversations it will inspire are important to have and the movie is well done, making it a worthwhile watch. I don’t think any book readers will be disappointed in the adaptation. Of course you never know, they changed the name of the restaurant and readers are nothing if not obsessed with pinpoint accuracy! (Guilty as charged tbh)
I’m generally a horror and sometimes action flick movie viewer, and I tend to see movies at the strangest times. (9:30am on a Saturday? Perfect!) The crowd for It Ends With Us was different, 100% women and actually full, and we walked out of the theater directly into a line at the bathroom. If you’re going to check this one out, maybe skip the bucket of diet coke. And don’t go into this expecting a romance movie. It seems like the marketing was a little off and if you went into this looking for a romance, you’d need a few minutes to absorb it. Maybe a few hours. Having read the book, I knew what to expect, but there were still several scenes that were intense.
I hope that It Starts With Us gets its own adaption so that we can see a little more of the ending Lily deserves.
